Responsibilities of the Executive Director
Reporting to the TBG’s Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Toronto Botanical Garden’s operations, which include gardens, buildings, programs, shopTBG, and library. Working within the guidelines of the Strategic Plan, the Executive Director ensures that the high quality of the TBG’s gardens, events and programming is maintained and enhanced. The Executive Director, with the assistance of staff and the Board of Directors, is also responsible for overseeing the design and implementation of the TBG’s income-generation program through special events, government grants, foundations, corporate and individual donors, membership development, internal operations and other fundraising efforts. An entrepreneur, the successful candidate actively seeks out fresh sources of funding. The successful candidate will also act as a spokesperson for the organization to the media, government agencies, funders, and non-government agencies, and seeks out ways to promote the organization. The Executive Director will be charged with establishing and maintaining collegial and effective working relationships with stakeholders including staff, the board of directors, the TBG’s 400+ strong volunteer base, government agencies, corporate and individual donors, all other stakeholders and the public.
Qualities of the Executive Director
- Must possess strong team and consensus-building skills and a proven ability to nurture and inspire the TBG staff, board, large volunteer base, government, media and all other stakeholders
- Must be a diplomat, not an autocrat, and, working with other senior managers, have the skills to be able to oversee and/or advise on the successful management of staff including performance, compensation, benefits, motivation, development, as well as hiring and termination
- Must have a significant interest in and knowledge of gardening and horticulture—strong preference will be given to candidates with a strong, demonstrable public presence or profile in the horticultural or environmental world
- Must have proven success in fundraising through special events, government grants, foundations and other donors
- Must be an intelligent, outgoing, collegial, high-energy person with a positive attitude who thrives in a team-oriented environment
- Must be an entrepreneurial, creative, innovative and conceptual thinker who can also be detail-oriented, analytical, resourceful and be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Must have excellent leadership, supervisory, planning, and organizational skills, as proven by 5 to 7 years in a senior management role
- Must possess the ability to make decisions, exercise sound business judgment, adhere to budgets and meet the highest standards of discretion and integrity
- Must be an effective communicator with proven strong oral and written skills and be comfortable with being the face of the TBG
- Must be well-connected within the Toronto community and farther afield, and have the ability to expand the TBG’s demographic base and supporters
- Must have budgeting and financial management experience in the private or not-for-profit sectors
- Must be computer literate
