Executive Director

Responsibilities of the Executive Director

Reporting to the TBG’s Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Toronto Botanical Garden’s operations, which include gardens, buildings, programs, shopTBG, and library. Working within the guidelines of the Strategic Plan, the Executive Director ensures that the high quality of the TBG’s gardens, events and programming is maintained and enhanced. The successful candidate will also act as a spokesperson for the organization to the media, government agencies, funders, and non-government agencies, and seeks out ways to promote the organization. The Executive Director will be charged with establishing and maintaining collegial and effective working relationships with stakeholders including staff, the board of directors, the TBG’s 400+ strong volunteer base, government agencies, corporate and individual donors, all other stakeholders and the public.

Qualities of the Executive Director

  • Must possess strong team and consensus-building skills and a proven ability to nurture and inspire the TBG staff, board, large volunteer base, government, media and all other stakeholders

  • Must be an intelligent, outgoing, collegial, high-energy person with a positive attitude who thrives in a team-oriented environment

  • Must possess the ability to make decisions, exercise sound business judgment, adhere to budgets and meet the highest standards of discretion and integrity
  • Must be an effective communicator with proven strong oral and written skills and be comfortable with being the face of the TBG
  • Must be well-connected within the Toronto community and farther afield, and have the ability to expand the TBG’s demographic base and supporters
  • Must have budgeting and financial management experience in the private or not-for-profit sectors

The Toronto Botanical Garden, the sole botanical garden in Canada’s largest city, is a volunteer-based, charitable organization whose purpose is to inspire passion, respect and understanding of gardening, horticulture, the natural landscape and a healthy environment. The Toronto Botanical Garden encourages, stimulates and educates more than 6,000 children and 10,000 adults year-round through a wide variety of programs, classes, seminars and special events, and also functions as a de facto natural and horticultural community centre within Edwards Gardens. With its 17 award-winning, city-sized, organically maintained, themed contemporary gardens spanning almost four acres and LEED certified building, the TBG is an urban oasis. Toronto Botanical Garden relies on the support of individuals, corporation and foundations. MORE THAN 95 PER CENT of our operating budget is self-generated through course revenues, membership fees, rentals, special events and the generous support of our many corporate and individual sponsors and donors.
