Job Summary
The Chief, Design Services provides leadership in art direction, design management, and production review for the National Gallery of Canada, including graphic design, exhibition design, exhibit installation, architectural and corporate design support for commercial and promotional products. The Chief, Design Services co-ordinates design initiatives with the professional resources of the Gallery and with private sector colleagues and contractors as dictated by the scope and objectives of assigned projects; including work in graphic design (typography etc), industrial design (cases, bases, and signage/wayfinding) and architectural design (exhibition installation, interior and building).
Requirements
• post secondary degree with a specialization in design, architecture, or industrial design, or an acceptable combination of education and experience
• at least 5 years experience designing exhibitions for art galleries and/or museums (art gallery experience preferred)
• at least 3 years experience managing and supervising design staff (managing in a unionized environment is an asset)
• experience in managing the design and production of environmental, graphic and architectural design, furniture and 3D products, public information graphics and digital/web products
• experience with exhibit evaluation, audience development and services for general public
• extensive experience in project management
• knowledge of art gallery and museum practices and processes
• knowledge of construction, fabrication, printing and electronic publishing techniques, principles and practices
• proficiency in Microsoft Office software, in particular Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MSProject
• expert proficiency in the use of MAC computers and Apple products and their various design software applications, especially the Adobe Creative Suite and PowerCADD
• superior oral and written communication skills in both official languages
• demonstrated leadership and team building abilities
• strategic analysis and assessment skills and organizational skills
